Physical Education
The aims of the Physical Education Department are to ensure that all our pupils enjoy sport and physical activity, while developing an appreciation of its role in ensuring good health and fitness, as well as physical, emotional and social well-being.
Sports: We offer a wide range of sporting activities, including football, hockey, basketball, netball, cricket, tennis, athletics, rounders, softball, gymnastics, dance, fitness and badminton.
Staffing: In addition to our team of P.E. specialists, other staff members contribute to our work through teaching skills, leading KS4 lessons and assisting with inter-house competitions. Furthermore we have specialist coaches who support our curriculum (e.g. Kinja Football Club and Saracens Rugby Club) to supplement the expertise of the P.E. staff where appropriate, in order to enhance the opportunities for pupils.
Experiences: Enrichment activities extend opportunities for pupils to develop their sporting interests and talents. Throughout the year visits to various sporting arenas are organised to view and partake in a variety of different sports. Pupils and staff relish these occasions and they have provided valuable insights to sporting life outside of school. Visits have included Hillingdon Outdoor Activity Centre, the British Basketball League final in Birmingham and Skiing at the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead.
Fixtures: The school enjoys an extensive range of inter-school fixtures in a wide range of sports. We are part of the Kingsbury School Sports Partnership. The school has a number of pupils who compete at County level, English Schools and are members of Development Squads in a number of sports. Inter-school fixtures are normally organised on a year group basis. The school has a thriving House System with six houses competing each year in all sports. Thus, all pupils have the opportunity to represent the school or house at their level at some stage in his or her career.
Facilities: In 2011, Wembley hosted the Finals of the Champions League Football Competition and St Gregory’s was fortunate to benefit from their legacy by providing a 3G football pitch. This floodlit sporting provision provides an all year round playing surface for every pupil to enjoy. In addition, there are two gymnasia, which provide a versatile space for teaching dance, fitness classes, gymnastics and other sports.
Some activities at Key Stages 4 & 5 take place at Harrow Leisure Centre, which is local to the school. The modern, well-equipped fitness suite offers a centre for building on the strong healthy and active lifestyle ethos that exists in the school. Furthermore, the squash courts, full sized basketball court and 5 badminton courts expand the opportunities available to the students further. Woodside Stadium hosts our annual Sports Day, which is a fabulous experience and a tremendous celebration of sporting success and endeavour.
